On 1 November 2025, a press cartoon by artist Gado stroke a chord. It showed Tanzania’s president-elect, Samia Suluhu Hassan, being sworn in before the Chief Justice, one hand holding the Quran, the other resting on the Constitution, standing on a pile of bloody corpses that the carpet covering them fails to hide. The president-elect’s hands, clothes, and even the Quran itself are stained with blood. Armed men with fierce expressions, masked faces, and skull-adorned berets protect the president and secure the inauguration ceremony.

Tarehe 21 Januari 2025, Tundu Lissu alimshinda Freeman Mbowe katika uchaguzi wa ndani wa CHADEMA (Chama Cha Demokrasia na Maendeleo) na akawa mwenyekiti mpya wa chama. Maswali mawili muhimu yaliibuka mara moja: Je, chama kingeweza kustahimili mabadiliko haya kutoka kwa Mbowe, mwanasiasa mzoefu aliyekuwa kiongozi wa chama kwa zaidi ya miaka ishirini na mtetezi wa hali ya kisiasa iliyokuwepo (status quo), hadi kwa Lissu, anayejulikana kama kiongozi mwenye msimamo mkali (Minde, 2024)? Na chama tawala cha muda mrefu CCM (Chama Cha Mapinduzi), ndani ya mfumo wa chama kimoja wa kiimla (Makulilo, 2008; Paget, 2019), kingejibu vipi?

Le 21 janvier 2025, Tundu Lissu l’emporte sur Freeman Mbowe lors des élections internes du CHADEMA (Chama Cha Demokrasia na Maendeleo, parti pour la démocratie et le développement), devenant le nouveau président du parti. Deux questions brûlantes se posent alors : le parti survivra-il à ce changement, passant de Mbowe, un politicien chevronné à la tête du parti depuis plus de vingt ans et défenseur du statu quo politique, à Lissu, un leader radical et intransigeant (Minde, 2024) ? Et comment le parti au pouvoir depuis des décennies, le CCM (Chama Cha Mapinduzi, parti de la révolution), dans le cadre d’un système autoritaire à parti unique (Makulilo, 2008; Paget, 2019), allait-il réagir à ce changement ?

On 21 January 2025, Tundu Lissu defeated Freeman Mbowe in the internal elections of CHADEMA (Chama Cha Demokrasia na Maendeleo, Party of Democracy and Development) and became the new party’s chairman. Two burning questions immediately arose: Would the party survive this change from Mbowe, a seasoned politician at the helm of the party for over twenty years and promoter of the political status quo, to Lissu, known to be a radical and uncompromising leader (Minde, 2024)? And how would the long-standing ruling CCM party (Chama Cha Mapinduzi, Party of the Revolution), within an authoritarian one-party system (Makulilo, 2008; Paget, 2019), react to it?

Mobile money, Money-changing and Social Relations at the Kenya-Uganda Border Points

The Busia and Malaba border points between Kenya and Uganda are not only a melting point of cultures and nationalities; it is also the hub of significant informal commercial activity. Money therefore plays a critical role in facilitating exchange. Within this understanding, mobile money stands out as an important medium of exchange and money changing, a critical means of exchanging value. This article describes the social embeddedness of the trading community at the border points and the distinctive role that mobile money and money changing practices plays in this regard.

The Role of Rites of Passage in Women’s Market Based Land Access: The Case of Two Villages in the Rufiji District, Rural Tanzania

This article seeks to explore how neo-customary practices, such as kitchen party ceremonies, are enabling women to derive financial power to purchase land in Tanzania. Using Mohoro West and Mohoro East villages situated in Rufiji district as case studies, key findings show that the reinvention of kitchen party ceremonies, which operate on a rotating credit scheme, has given women financial power to be able to purchase land from the developing land market in the villages.

L’or de Kakamega : étude du renouveau de l’activité minière artisanale dans l’Ouest du Kenya

Cette activité, qui connaît un renouveau depuis les années 1990, se développe à l’ombre des ruines des anciennes mines ouvertes durant la période coloniale britannique. L’orpaillage, pluriel dans ses formes et dans ses pratiques, apparaît alors comme une nouvelle source de revenus pour la population du comté, bien que ces activités aient des impacts environnementaux importants.

La question de la soumission féminine dans le couple catalyse aujourd’hui les tensions entre les anciens, arrivés de RDC, et les jeunes fidèles nés et ayant grandi en Suisse. Ces derniers contestent les visions trop rigides des rapports de genre qu’ils jugent non adaptés à leurs réalités sentimentales et/ou maritales et familiales, mais ils les reproduisent aussi souvent.

Être agent de propreté urbaine demeure surtout compliqué pour les femmes, majoritaires dans ce secteur. La propreté urbaine a été construite comme un « bastion féminin », perçue comme étant en continuité avec les tâches que les femmes au Burundi exerçaient traditionnellement dans leurs ménages.
